Der NFL Draft 2020 ist durch – Zeit, um mal einen genauen Blick auf unsere Picks zu werfen. Mit welchen Talenten haben wir uns verstärkt, auf welchen Positionen sind wir jetzt besser aufgestellt und was haben unsere neuen Spieler am College so geleistet? Hier bekommst du einen Überblick und kannst dich schon mal mit unseren Nachwuchsstars vertraut machen:
Chase Claypool: Wide Receiver (2. Runde, Pick 49)
Weil wir dieses Jahr unseren Erstrundenpick schon Anfang der Saison 2019 für Minkah Fitzpatrick zu den Miami Dolphins getradet hatten, starteten wir erst am zweiten Tag in den NFL Draft 2020. Mit unserem höchsten Pick haben wir uns auf der Wide-Receiver-Position verstärkt. Chase Claypool war am College eine echte Waffe – 1.037 Yards und 13 Touchdowns in 13 Spielen für Notre Dame in der vergangenen Saison sind wirklich starke Zahlen. Jetzt kann er von unserem Star-Receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster lernen und seine Talent auch in der NFL unter Beweis stellen – Big Ben freut sich schon auf ihn.

Alex Highsmith: Linebacker (3. Runde, Pick 102)
Mit unserem Drittrundenpick haben wir unsere Defense verstärkt – das sollte ungemütlich für die gegnerischen Quarterbacks werden. Alex Highsmith hat sich vor allem als Edge Rusher profiliert und in der College-Saison 2019 14 Sacks verzeichnet. Nur drei Defensivspieler hatten landesweit mehr Sacks eingesammelt. Garniert hat er diese Hausnummer mit 21.5 Tackles for Loss. An der University of Charlotte hat er für sein Football-Team, die Charlotte 49ers, fünf neue Schulrekorde aufgestellt. Darunter die meisten Sacks in einer Saison (14) und in einem Spiel (4,5). Das macht Lust auf mehr!

Anthony McFarland Jr.: Running Back (4. Runde, Pick 124)
Dieser Pick wurde von vielen Ligaexperten als positiv bewertet: Mit Anthony McFarland Jr. bekommen wir einen energiegeladenen Running Back, der am College in Maryland für einiges an Aufsehen gesorgt hat. Mit 6,7 Yards pro Lauf hat er den drittbesten Wert in der Schulhistorie hingelegt. Nach einer unfassbar starken Debütsaison 2018 mit über 1.000 Rushing-Yards hatte er 2019 mit Verletzungsproblemen zu kämpfen. Wenn er aber wieder richtig fit ist, könnte er unser Backfield um James Conner stark ergänzen und dank seiner Geschwindigkeit den einen oder anderen Highlight-Lauf liefern.

Kevin Dotson: Offensive Line (4. Runde Pick 135)
Dieser Pick war eine kleine Überraschung, schließlich konnte sich Guard Kevin Dotson nicht beim NFL Combine 2020 präsentieren – er hatte keine Einladung bekommen. Er war der erste Spieler im NFL Draft 2020, der ohne Combine-Auftritt gedraftet wurde. Doch die Steelers hatten ihn schon länger auf dem Schirm, vor allem seine Athletik und seine Stärken im Laufspiel haben ihn für das Traditionsteam interessant gemacht. Ganz nebenbei ist mit dieser Auswahl ein Kindheitstraum in Erfüllung gegangen: Dotson war von Kindesbeinen an ein Steelers-Fan. Fun-Fact: Seine Onkel Alvin und Dennis McKinley haben schon in der NFL gespielt.
Antoine Brooks Jr.: Safety (6. Runde, Pick 198)
Mit dem Sechstrundenpick von der University of Maryland (ehemaliger Teamkollege von McFarland Jr.) kommt eine Verstärkung für die Defense gegen den Lauf. Antoine Brooks Jr. ist nicht der schnellste Spieler, aber seine guten Instinkte lassen ihn trotzdem schnell spielen. Seine athletischen und körperlichen Voraussetzungen machen ihn zu einem harten und versierten Tackler, der gerne nach vorne geht und die Plays der Gegner zerstört. In Duellen gegen Running Backs und Tight Ends hat er ganz klar seine Stärken.

Carlos Davis: Defensive Tackle (7. Runde, Pick 232)
Der Defensive Tackle war an der Universität von Nebraska aktiv – direkt neben seinem Zwillingsbruder Khalil, der auf derselben Position spielt. Carlos Davis hat 32 Tackles und vier Sacks in elf Spielen verzeichnet. In seinem Team hatte nur sein Bruder bessere Stats vorzuweisen. Der 1,88 Meter große und 145 Kilogramm schwere Nose Tackle soll vor allem die Mitte der Defensive beschützen – eine Position, die die Steelers definitiv im Draft verstärken wollten und es mit ihrem letzten Pick im NFL Draft 2020 auch getan haben.
