The Steelers placed tight end Xavier Grimble on the reserve/injured list not long after the team traded for Seahawks tight end Nick Vennett. Grimble suffered a calf injury in Sunday's game against the San Francisco 49ers and replaced by Zach Gentry, with Vance McDonald already sidelined with a shoulder injury suffered in game.
Grimble, who is in his fourth season, had played in 47 games, starting four. He has 23 receptions for 239 yards, an 8.6 yard average, and three touchdowns. This season he had just one reception for three yards in three games.
Grimble entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with the New York Giants in 2014. He was released by the Giants before the season started, and spent part of the year on the San Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots practice squads. He was signed to the 49ers offseason roster after the 2014 season, but waived before the beginning of the 2015 season. He was signed to the Steelers practice squad for the 2015 season, and has been on the active roster since the 2016 season.
