Steelers acquire Smith in trade

The Steelers acquired linebacker Preston Smith from the Green Bay Packers, pending a physical, in exchange for a seventh-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Smith, who is in his 10th season, has appeared in 155 career games, starting 138 of them. He has 425 career tackles, 265 of them solo stops, as well as 71 tackles for a loss and 68.5 sacks.

Smith also has 155 quarterback hurries, 27 passes defensed, 10 forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries and five interceptions.

Smith was drafted by the Washington Commanders in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft, the 38th overall pick. He spent four seasons with the Commanders, appearing in 64 games. He had 24.5 sacks in his time in Washington, and 29 tackles for a loss.

He signed with the Packers in 2019, spending the last six seasons with Green Bay. He has appeared in 91 games with the Packers, recording 44 sacks. Smith set a career-high with 12 sacks in 2019, as well as a career-high 75 tackles.

Smith played college football at Mississippi State where he earned first-team All-SEC honors from the league's coaches. He was also the first player to be named SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week for three consecutive weeks.

The Steelers also released tight end Rodney Williams from the 53-man roster and receiver Andy Isabella and linebacker Craig Young from the practice squad.
