Steelers lose to Chiefs, 29-10

When the NFL schedule was released earlier this season, the six-game stretch that began with a road game at Cleveland on a short week and ended with the Chiefs on Christmas Day was considered a make-or-break stretch for the Steelers.

While the team put enough wins on their ledger earlier in the season to clinch a playoff berth and make that less so the case, the six-game stretch has proven to be a rough one.

That was punctuated on Christmas Day by a loss to the two-time defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs, as Patrick Mahomes passed for 328 yards and three touchdowns and Kansas City handed the Steelers their third-consecutive loss, 29-10, Wednesday at Acrisure Stadium.

While the loss, which drops the Steelers to 10-6 after a 10-3 start, doesn't knock the Steelers out of the postseason, it does put their chances of winning the AFC North in jeopardy. The Steelers now need to beat the Bengals in Week 18 at Acrisure Stadium next week, coupled with a loss by Baltimore, to win the division on a tiebreaker.

"That sucked, to be blunt," said Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin. "Not the type of ball we want to play, and really kind of eerily similar to our last performance in that we're not doing the fundamental things well enough. We're turning the ball over. We're not getting turnovers. That hasn't been a recipe for us, but it has been of late. Minus-2 or whatever we were in this game, you're not giving yourself a chance, particularly turning the ball over in the red zone."

The Steelers did exactly that, throwing an interception in the end zone in the first quarter and losing a fumble in the fourth quarter to set up a Kansas City touchdown.

"You're running on the beach when you're performing like that, coupled with lack of situational play making, red zone, defense, making people settle for field goals as opposed to touchdowns," Tomlin said. "The games are going to look like that. We've got to score more than 10 points against an outfit like that."

The Chiefs (15-1) clinched the No. 1-overall seed in the AFC playoffs with the victory. And they did so without star defensive tackle Chris Jones available.

Despite that, the Chiefs sacked quarterback Russell Wilson 5 times and intercepted him once.

Things didn't start well for the Steelers and only got worse as the game wore on.

On their first play from scrimmage after taking the opening kickoff, Wilson completed a 7-yard pass to tight end Pat Freiermuth. But Wilson was sacked on third-and-2 and the Steelers were forced to punt.

Corliss Waitman's punt was returned 25 yards by Nikko Remigio to the Pittsburgh 42.

That set up a 7-yard touchdown pass from Mahomes to Xavier Worthy. But Worthy was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct following the play, moving the PAT attempt back. Harrison Butker missed the kick and the Chiefs took a 6-0 lead.

The Steelers picked up a first down on their next possession, but Wilson's third-down pass to George Pickens, returning after missing the past three games with a hamstring injury, fell incomplete when Pickens got tangled up with cornerback Trent McDuffie.

Mark Robinson forced a fumble on the ensuing punt, but the Steelers were unable to recover the loose ball. But they did force the Chiefs into a third-and-11 play at their own 20. Mahomes escaped pressure and ran to his left, avoiding pressure. As linebacker Payton Wilson closed on him, he flipped the ball underhand over Wilson's head to running back Samaje Perine for a 13-yard gain.

Mahomes then went deep to Justin Watson for a 49-yard gain down the sideline to the Pittsburgh 17 before throwing an 11-yard touchdown pass to Watson to give Kansas City a 13-0 lead.

The Steelers looked to answer on their next possession, as Wilson threw a 41-yard pass to Pickens down the sideline against McDuffie to the Kansas City 36. Back-to-back Jaylen Warren runs put the ball at the Kansas City 8. Warren burst into the end zone on the next play, but Darnell Washington was called for a hold on the play and the Steelers were moved back to the 18.

Wilson was then intercepted in the end zone on a pass intended for Freiermuth by safety Eric Reid, turning the Steelers away.

But the Steelers forced a three-and-out by the Chiefs and got the ball back at their own 32.

Riding Jaylen Warren and a couple of 15-yard passes to Freiermuth, the Steelers went 78 yards to score on a 1-yard Wilson run around left end to cut the Kansas City lead to 13-7 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the second quarter.

Kansas City drove to the Pittsburgh 31 on its next possession, but Patrick Queen tackled DeAndre Hopkins short of a first down. Kansas City lined up to go for a fourth-down conversion, but the Chiefs were called for holding T.J. Watt on the play and punted on fourth-and-11 from their own 41.

The Chiefs got the ball to open the second half and drove to the Pittsburgh 13. But back-to-back Mahomes incompletions forced a 32-yard Butker field goal for a 16-7 lead.

The Steelers answered that field goal drive with one of their own, as Wilson converted third-and-14 with a 14-yard gain to Calvin Austin III and a third-and-9 with a 15-yard scramble to set Chris Boswell up for a 36-yard kick that trimmed the Kansas City lead to 16-10 with just under six minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Mahomes, however, moved the Chiefs down the field on their next possession, picking apart the Steelers with quick throws to get the ball to the 2 as the fourth quarter began. Kareem Hunt scored from there to put Kansas City ahead, 22-10. But a Mahomes' pass on a two-point conversion play was intercepted by Cory Trice to keep the score at 22-10.

On third-and-15, Wilson checked the ball down to Freiermuth who fumbled while being tackled short of the sticks by McDuffie. Nick Bolton recovered the ball at the Pittsburgh 34.

That set up a 12-yard touchdown pass from Mahomes to tight end Travis Kelce that gave the Chiefs a 29-10 lead with 12:38 remaining in the game.

Warren was one of the lone bright spots for the Steelers, gaining 71 yards rushing on 11 carries and an additional 41 yards on five receptions. The Steelers rushed for 202 yards, while Pickens had three receptions for 50 yards in his return.

"You can look at it from a lot of angles. The bottom line is junior varsity is not good enough," Tomlin said. "We've got to own that. But we've also got to look at what it is we need to do different. We're not going to continue to do the same things and hope for a different result.

"That doesn't seem sharp to me. So we're going to take a hard look at this. We've got a couple extra days before we get back into it. We're going to take a look at it and make whatever necessary changes we need to make in the totality of this thing, because again, that doesn't feel good. It doesn't look good. That's just the truth and reality of it."
