Steelers defeat Jets, 37-15

Russell Wilson made his first start in a Steelers uniform a memorable one.

With the Steelers honoring the 50th anniversary of the 1974 Super Bowl team, Wilson and the offense put on a show, with the quarterback throwing a pair of touchdown passes and rushing for another as the Steelers dispatched the Jets, 37-15, Sunday night before a packed crowd of 66,956 at Acrisure Stadium.

Wilson, who had missed the first six games of the season with a calf injury, completed 16 of 29 passes for 264 yards, posting a passer rating of 109.0 to outduel New York's Aaron Rodgers.

Rodgers threw for 276 yards, but was picked off twice in the game, both by rookie cornerback Beanie Bishop, as the Steelers scored 31 unanswered points to overcome a 15-6 first-half deficit and improve to 5-2.

"(There's) nothing like prime time football at Acrisure," said Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin. "I'm just really appreciative of the atmosphere and the quality of play. Thought we got stronger as the game went on in all three phases, man. We made plays in all three phases."

The Jets, who rushed for just 54 yards on 15 carries, fall to 2-5. Davante Adams, acquired via trade from the Raiders earlier in the week, caught three passes for 30 yards in his debut for the Jets.

The first half started well enough for the Steelers, as Wilson hit his first pass, a play-action rollout to tight end Darnell Washington for a 15-yard gain. But the Steelers stalled out at the New York 28 and settled for a 46-yard Chris Boswell field goal and a 3-0 lead on the game's opening possession.

The Jets went three-and-out on their first possession, but on their second attempt with the ball, Hall caught a pair of passes for 31 yards and then scored on a run from the 13 around left end to give the Jets a 7-3 lead.

The Steelers cut that advantage to 7-6 in the second quarter, as Wilson connected on a 44-yard bomb to George Pickens. The Steelers got to the New York 6 on a 5-yard run by Najee Harris, but Harris was stopped for a 5-yard loss on second down, stalling the drive as they settled for a 29-yard Boswell field goal.

Hall struck again on New York's ensuing possession, catching a short dump off and racing 57 yards through the defense, eluding several would-be tacklers until he was brought down at the 3 by safety Minkah Fitzpatrick.

On third-and-goal from the 1, Rodgers tossed a 1-yard touchdown pass to tight end Tyler Conklin. Fitzpatrick blocked the PAT attempt, but was penalized for using leverage as he leaped over a New York blocker and the Jets instead converted a 2-point conversion with Rodgers throwing to Garrett Wilson for a 15-6 lead.

The Steelers got to the 40 on their next possession, but Wilson was sacked and they were forced to punt before Bishop intercepted Rodgers with just over one minute remaining in the half.

It was a huge swing in momentum.

"Without a doubt, two-minute football, we know Aaron's going to be aggressive," said Tomlin. "We switched up the schematics and he made a significant play, he meaning Beanie."

Sauce Gardner was then penalized for pass interference at the New York 11 with 37 seconds remaining in the half. Gardner also was injured on the play.

Two plays later, Wilson threw a back–pylon throw to Pickens for an 11-yard touchdown pass with 27 seconds left in the half that cut New York's lead to 15-13.

"I thought he was excellent," Tomlin said of Wilson. "I thought he got better as the game went on. But I'm not surprised by that. It's been a while since he played some ball, but I thought he settled in, knock the rust off and distributed the ball around and played well."

The Steelers regained the lead, 16-15, in the third quarter. After forcing a New York punt, they drove 76 yards on 11 plays, the biggest of which were a 37-yard juggling catch by Pickens on third down and a 21-yard reception by Pat Freiermuth, before getting stopped on three-straight plays from the 3.

Bishop then picked Rodgers off for a second time, as his pass hit Garrett Wilson in the chest, bounced backwards and into the arms of Bishop. Bishop returned the ball across the field, taking it to the New York 1. Russell Wilson took it in from there on a QB sneak to give the Steelers a 23-15 lead midway through the third quarter.

The Jets drove into the Steelers' red zone on the ensuing possession, but Dean Lowry blocked a Greg Zeurlein field goal attempt – the Steelers' third blocked kick in as many games – to turn New York away.

Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren ran the Steelers into scoring range from there, with Harris busting loose on a 36-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter to set up a second Wilson touchdown pass, this one of 4 yards to Van Jefferson for a 30-15 Steelers' lead.

The Jets drove to the Pittsburgh 25 on their ensuing possession, but Keenu Benton knocked down a fourth-down pass by Rodgers to turn New York over on downs with just under eight minutes remaining in the game.

Harris scored from the 10 with 26 seconds remaining to set the final score.

Pickens finished with 5 receptions for 111 yards and a touchdown, while Harris rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries as the Steelers ran for 139 yards and had 409 yards of total offense.

"Obviously, the offense played a major role in this game, but the offense, the defense, the special teams, it was back-to-back weeks that we really played complimentary football," said tight end Pat Freiermuth. "It's awesome that we're finding our stride right now."
