Steelers inactives for Week 2 at Broncos

Quarterback Justin Fields will make his second consecutive start today against the Denver Broncos, as Russell Wilson is once again listed as the third quarterback.

Fields started last week against the Falcons and prepared all week in practice to start today, while Wilson is dealing with a calf injury that occurred in training camp.

"Regarding Russell's availability, I'm going to list him as questionable," said Coach Mike Tomlin on Friday. "So, obviously if his availability is questionable, then starting is less so.

"But we've been in that mindset all week. Like I've said, we've been focused on getting Justin ready to play and we'll continue in that mindset as we push forward toward game time."

Unlike a week ago, Fields had more time to prepare this week, but his approach hasn't changed.

"I guess it helps me a little bit," said Fields. "But like I said last week, I come into every week the same with the same approach that I'm going to play. I'd rather be ready and just have that mindset.

"So, I guess it helps a little bit. But it's really the same process for me."

Fields, who was acquired by the Steelers in a trade with the Chicago Bears this offseason, said getting the extra reps in practice this week is a benefit to him.

"Anytime you can get reps, you feel more comfortable with the play," said Fields. "Of course, I think that's with everybody and everything that we do, just as human beings. So of course, when you do it physically, then you're more comfortable with it.

"But like I said, you just got to have to keep the same mentality each and every week, because you never know what can happen."

Receiver Roman Wilson is also inactive this week. Wilson missed the entire preseason, as well as the season opener against the Falcons, after suffering an ankle injury early in training camp.

He was hoping this was going to be the week he returned to the field. He said he felt good in practice, but after being a full participant on Thursday, was limited on Friday and listed as questionable.

"It was good," said Wilson of getting some work during the week. "Just an opportunity to go out there and work. I have another opportunity tomorrow. That is what I am focused on. So, it will be good.

"I take it as it comes. It's up to the coaches. All I can do is focus on tomorrow. Just focus on that and be good."

"I have been working a lot, trying to get back into it. Even the moment I got hurt, I felt like I could find a way to push through it and come back that same week and practice the next day. So, that's just my mindset."

With Wilson out, the Steelers elevated receiver Ben Skowronek from the practice squad to the Active/Inactive Roster for the game. Skowronek will revert back to the practice squad after the game. Skowronek was also elevated for the Week 1 game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Skowronek was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL Draft, the 249th overall pick. He appeared in 45 games for the Rams, starting 12, while pulling in 58 receptions for 575 yards.

Guard Isaac Seumalo remains out after suffering a pectoral injury, missing his second consecutive game. With Seumalo out, Spencer Anderson will once again start at left guard.
