Steelers host youth football minicamps

The Steelers have a strong commitment to the next generation of football players, and they are reaching out to even more kids this year through the Steelers Youth Football Minicamps.

The team already hosts multiple two-day football camps, but this year added the minicamps to reach a broader audience and service more in the area surrounding Pittsburgh.

"It's awesome because we get to work with other communities," said Mike Marchinsky, the Steelers Youth and High School Football Marketing Manager. "We are going to Washington County, Greene County and being in their neighborhood. The kids can come check it out and it's awesome. It's an opportunity for us to go some places we haven't been in the past, and also get to those kids that haven't had a chance to interact with Steelers players before."

Mike Hilton helped kicks things off at the first minicamp, which was held at Trinity Middle School, and the turnout and reaction was just what Marchinsky anticipated.

"The player makes the whole thing," said Marchinsky. "The kids have an opportunity to see the player, interact with the player, and realize they are just like them in many instances. If they work hard, maybe they can be that kind of player. The players have fun too. There is so much stress, especially this time of year working hard, but when they have the chance to be with the kids and just play football, they have fun."

Youth football continues to thrive in Western Pennsylvania, and supporting it is extremely important to the Steelers' organization.

"The passion for football is still there," said Marchinsky. "The passion for the Steelers is higher than ever. It's awesome to see everybody come together. Our players really enjoy coming out and interacting with the kids and that puts it over the top."

The team will host minicamps throughout the summer, including the following:

Greensburg Central Catholic – Thursday, June 21
