Cheat Sheet: Steelers at the bye

After eight weeks, the Steelers:

  • Are 6-2, with one of their losses coming at home and one on the road. They've yet to play a divisional game, but Pittsburgh is 4-1 in AFC games. The Steelers are on a three-game winning streak, which is the fourth-highest in the league behind Kansas City (7), Detroit (5), and Green Bay (4).
  • Are currently leading the AFC North and would be the No. 3 seed if the playoffs started this week. No matter what happens next week, the Steelers will still be atop the AFC North standings.
  • Have a plus-68-point differential. That is behind only Buffalo in the AFC and is fourth-best in the league, just one point behind Washington, the Steelers' next opponent. Only the Lions, Bills and Commanders have a better points per drive discrepancy than Pittsburgh.
  • Have scored five more touchdowns than their opponents as well as posting 381 more rushing yards.
  • Have an average time of possession of 31:42, seventh-best in the league. In their away games, that shoots up to 32:43.
  • Own the NFL's second-best turnover differential at plus-10. Only the Bills are better. Only the Packers have more takeaways, and only the Vikings have more interceptions. Pittsburgh's five giveaways are better than every team except the Commanders, Bills and Chargers. The Steelers are one of three teams to have thrown just one interception this season.
  • Have gotten a first down via an opponent's penalty 21 times compared to just seven given by Pittsburgh.

The Steelers Offense:

  • Averages 5.2 yards per play. That is tied for 18th with the Rams and Chargers. But over their past three games, the Steelers average 5.9 yards per play.
  • Passes the ball 47.3% of their snaps. Only the Eagles throw it at a lower rate.
  • The Steelers offense uses 13 Personnel (14.3%) at the league's highest rate and 12 Personnel (21.7%) at the league's 10th highest rate. In turn, they are in 11 Personnel just 39.6% of their offensive snaps. That is the 28th highest rate.
  • In terms of points per quarter, the Steelers average 3.1 in the first, 5.1 in the second, 6.6 in the third and 8.5 in the fourth quarter of play.
  • Last week the Steelers produced 19 plays of 10-plus yards - their season high and tied for the sixth-most of any team this season.
  • Turns a series of downs into a new series of downs or a first down at exactly the league average rate (70%).
  • Of anyone with at least 50 pass attempts, Russell Wilson ranks third (271.0) in yards per game, first in yards per attempt (9.51), ninth in average depth of target (9.2) and 12th quickest in average time to thrown (2.51 seconds).
  • Of receivers with a minimum of 25 targets, George Pickens ranks sixth in team air yards share (46%), eighth in team target share (26.1%), 10th in receiving yards (548), 10th in yards per route run (2.66) and second in end zone targets (9)
  • Pat Freiermuth has not had more than three targets in a game since Week 4 and only has one game this season with more than four receptions. However, he has caught 26 of his 31 targets.
  • Has used play-action on 31.4% of their drop backs, the fourth-highest percentage in the league. When using play-action, Wilson is 15 of 22 for 275 yards.
  • Pittsburgh's passers have been pressured on 37.6% of their drop backs. Only five offenses are worse. And their 8.8% of drop backs resulting in sacks is also only better than five.
  • Is averaging 138.1 rushing yards per game, eighth-best in the league.
  • Have 33 runs of 10-plus yards. Only four teams have more.
  • Pittsburgh's ball carriers generate 2.79 on average after first contact. Only five offenses are worse.
  • Najee Harris is currently on a three-game streak with over 100 rushing yards. The 322 rushing yards he has accumulated over those three games makes up 54% of his rushing yards through eight games. He is now 12th in rushing yards (74.0) per game. Of all ball carriers with at least 100 rushing attempts, Harris is 12th in rushing first downs created (26), 8th in percentage of runs (5.9%) to go for 15-plus yards, fourth in missed tackles forced per attempt (.21), eighth in yards after contact per attempt (2.71) and sixth in percentage of yards that come after first contact (62.2%). Harris also has yet to fumble this season. Last week, Harris averaged 3.1 yards before contact - the highest of his career.
  • Pittsburgh's average starting field position starts at the 31.7-yard line, sixth-best in the NFL.
  • The Steelers score points on 46% of their drives, ninth-best in the league.
  • Dan Moore leads the offense, having played 522 of a possible 531 snaps. No one else is over 476 (Broderick Jones).

The Steelers Defense:

  • Averages 5.3 yards per play allowed. That is tied for eighth in the NFL.
  • Averages 310.3 yards allowed per game. That is ninth-best.
  • Gives up 1.43 points per drive. That is only behind the Chargers and Broncos.
  • In terms of points allowed per quarter, the Steelers average 5.5 in the first, 3.8 in the second, 0.0 in the third and 5.6 in the fourth quarter.
  • The Chargers and Bears are the only two defenses to give up fewer touchdowns (12) than Pittsburgh's defense. And both Los Angeles and Chicago have already had their bye week.
  • Is seeing 11 Personnel against them 59.1% of their snaps, the sixth-highest percentage in the league.
  • Pittsburgh's defense allows the opponent to convert a series of downs into a new series of downs or a touchdown at a 68% rate. That is tied for seventh-best.
  • Has allowed 1,037 yards after the catch, seventh-most in the league.
  • On average, the ball comes out of the opposing quarterback's hand in 2.68 seconds against the Steelers. Only the Titans and Eagles face a shorter time to throw.
  • Has blitzed on 20.7% of opposing drop backs. Only four defenses blitz less.
  • Last week was Cameron Heyward's 202nd with the Steelers, setting the franchise record for most games played by a defensive player.
  • TJ Watt now has 25.5 sacks since the start of the 2023 season, most in the league. Watt has forced four fumbles this year. That is tied with Fred Warner for most in the league. He now has 31 for his career, most in the NFL during that time … and Watt missed 11 games in 2022. Watt also has 10 tackles for loss. Only Will Anderson has more.
  • Alex Highsmith racked up a dozen pressures last week, the most of his career. Highsmith recorded six pressures in under 2.5 seconds, his sixth game over the past three years with 5-plus quick pressures. Only Myles Garrett and Micah Parsons (9 each) have more games with 5-plus quick pressures over that time.
  • Give up just 4.0 yards per carry. The only defenses better are Baltimore, Kansas City and Minnesota.
  • Stops opposing ball carriers at or behind the line of scrimmage 20.2% of the time. Only the Titans, Broncos, Bills and Ravens are better.
  • Give up just 2.7 yards after contact per carry, seventh-best in the league.
  • Only the Vikings and Chargers have allowed fewer rushing touchdowns than the Steelers (4). Both of those teams have already had their bye week.
  • Pittsburgh's opponents are running the ball between the tackles at a 55.7% clip. Only the Ravens and 49ers see a higher percentage of inside runs.
  • Pittsburgh causes a three-and-out on 29% of drives. Only the Dolphins, Seahawks and Titans have a lower percentage.
  • The Steelers defense starts it average drive at the 26.8-yard line. Only the Saints, Lions and Broncos start with better field position.
  • The Steelers defense has been on the field for 497 snaps. Six defenders have played 433 or more snaps. Patrick Queen leads the way with 496, followed by Joey Porter at 493, Minkah Fitzpatrick at 488, Watt at 455 and Donte Jackson and DeShon Elliott at 433 apiece.

The Steelers Special Teams:

  • Chris Boswell is on pace to set the NFL record for most field goals made in a season. He has yet to miss and extra point (14/14) and has just one missed field goal, an attempt from 62 yards against the Chargers. Boswell is 19 of 20 on field goal attempts.
  • The Steelers average 3.0 field goal attempts per game. Only Washington is higher.
  • Corliss Waitman had three touchbacks in his first game, against Denver. Since then, he's had just one. He has 12 punts that have been downed inside the 20-yard line.
  • Pittsburgh has only returned seven kickoffs all year. Their opponents have returned 14.
  • Pittsburgh's average punt return goes for 12.9 yards, seventh-best.
  • Rodney Williams has played 105 special teams snaps. That is fifth-most on the team as Connor Heyward and Miles Killebrew have each played 142 and Payton Wilson and Mark Robinson have played 141.
