The Pittsburgh Steelers, in collaboration with Commonwealth Press, are releasing 10 gameday posters, one for each home game during the 2023 season, and one to commemorate the entire season! Local artists sourced by Commonwealth Press will design each poster to commemorate the individual game. A limited number of posters will be available for purchase on game day at the Steelers Pro Shop.
All gameday poster proceeds will benefit Artists Image Resource located in Pittsburgh.
ABOUT THE BENEFICIARY: Artists Image Resource (AIR)is a laboratory designed to serve artists, educators, and the community. AIR creates an exciting and dynamic learning environment that fosters experimentation, individuality, and peer mentorship by bringing established and emerging artists together in its print studio and exhibition space on Pittsburgh's Northside. 2023 Season Poster
Bio: CommonWealth Press's art department is Dan Rugh and Mark Bogacki.
They have been creating art together for around 15 years to build one of the most recognizable local brands in Pittsburgh.
As a team, they have shaped an entire line of CommonWealth Press merchandise sold in retail stores across the city alongside CWPs own brick-and-mortar stores in the South Side, Bloomfield, Mt Lebanon, and the Airport...plus various pop-ups and craft fairs all over the place.
They have created art and worked with the Andy Warhol Museum, The City of Pittsburgh, Rick Seback, WCRT, Leonas Ice Cream, the Blue Devil Rugby Club, WQED, Handmade Arcade, Matt Dayak, Bottlerocket Social Hall, WESA, the Pittsburgh Children's Museum, Night in the Woods, 3 Rivers Outdoor Co, 96.1 KISS, Sapling Press, The Pittsburgh Pirates, Workerbird, WYEP, Edgar Snyder, Bootstrap Design Co, WPTS, Turner's Tea, WDVE, Augst Wilson House, John Fetterman, East End Brewing Company, Yellow Couch Studio, plus so much more ... and now the Pittsburgh Steelers!Â
When not drawing or designing, Mark and Dan enjoy riding bikes, camping, and listening to Hall and Oates.
Week 1: Steelers vs. 49ers
Bio: This is Mark Benders third year collaborating with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Commonwealth Press on the Game Day poster project. His meticulously crafted images have been incorporated into advertising, editorial and institutional clients including MLB, NHL, NFL, Simon & Shuster, Sony Music, NPR, UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, Heinz USA, Carnegie Mellon University, PITT University, East End Brewing, Pittsburgh Regional Transit, The Heinz History Center, Federated Investors and Commonwealth Press. Mark's illustration is classically inspired and combines traditional media with contemporary technology to create compelling imagery that connects with the audience. His visual vocabulary pulls from vintage advertising of the 20's and 30's, WPA and propaganda posters, giving contemporary concepts a timeless motif.
A college educator in Pittsburgh for over 20 years, Mark is an Associate Professor in Graphic Design at Chatham University, Shadyside.
Week 2: Steelers vs. Browns
Bio: Wayno® is a cartoonist, illustrator, and musician, who lives and works in Pittsburgh.
He is the daily cartoonist for Bizarro, distributed by King Features Syndicate to more than 350 newspapers worldwide. He has been published in underground and alternative comics since the 1990s and has enjoyed a long career as a freelance illustrator, working with such clients as The New Yorker, Nickelodeon, Entertainment Weekly, Warner Music Group, The London Guardian, and The New York Times.
Wayno also serves as the chair of the Pittsburgh Chapter of the National Cartoonists Society and is a member of the United Cartoon Workers of America and the Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators.
Week 5: Steelers vs. Ravens
Bio: Nina Zivkovic is the Design Director of Ready®, one of the fast-growing sports nutrition brands in America. She has had the pleasure of working with the Pittsburgh Steelers & Commonwealth Press for three years on their incredible Game Day Poster Series. Nina is a member of the Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators and loves to continually engage with new and upcoming designers as a mentorand board advisor for universities and vocational schools. She has utilized both her award-winning graphic design and illustration skills with an array of local and international clients like Women Who Rock™, Melinda and the Night Sky, Stage AE, Primanti Bros., P3R Marathon, Anti-Flag, Giant Eagle, Rostrum Records, PLB Sports & Entertainment, Alan Ritchson, and many more. Nina's style is inspired by her love of art nouveau, comic books, movie posters, and music. She dives deep into symbolism and emotions when crafting her concepts while listening to curated playlists, tying her graphic design degree with her passion for illustration and creativity to conjure unique and fantastical creations, whether minimalistic or complex. She is an avid football and sports fan and loves that she is able to bring together her personal and career passions in her role at Ready®.
Week 8: Steelers vs. Jaguars
Bio: Hi, my name is Shawn Atkins and I'm a cartoonist of webcomics, a lover of oatmeal raisin cookies, and a dad. Comics have been a lifelong passion of mine. From exploring the depths of the ocean to the outer reaches of time and space, comics fuel my curiosity about what's out there in the world. Recently re-found my love of Photography and the Darkroom at Pittsburgh Center of the Arts where I offer comic-making classes. When I'm not making comics I'm hanging with my family, watching movies, cooking, or opening a portal to the dark dimension like one does on a Tuesday morning. Currently, I'm going back to school to become an art teacher.
