Week 18: Steelers vs. Browns
Bio: Charlie Wagers is a graphic artist & designer, the product of gray Midwestern skies and a blue collar, Rust Belt aesthetic. Formally trained in fine arts, he draws inspiration from the antique and arcane: early printing techniques, vintage cameras and films, aged textures, forgotten books, and—oddly enough—old neon signs. Growing up on 800 acres of Kentucky farmland, Charlie forged a deep connection with nature, and today he still spends much of his time outdoors, hiking or riding his bike in search of new colors and contrasts.
Humorist and bestselling author David Sedaris has described Charlie's unique style as "Chillbilly," a term the designer proudly wears on his sleeve. He has worked for clients including Disney, Apple, ESPN, and National Geographic, as well as a massive roster of bands such as Dave Matthews Band, Alabama Shakes, Thrice, The Fray and The Black Keys. His work has been recognized by Communication Arts, Print Magazine, CMYK Magazine, Logo Lounge and AIGA. Charlie currently lives in Pittsburgh, where he divides his time between constant travel, playing pinball and his vinyl record collection.
Week 16: Steelers vs. Raiders
Bio: Mark Bender's illustration is classically inspired and hand-crafted, combining traditional media with contemporary technology to create compelling imagery that connects with the audience. His visual vocabulary pulls from vintage advertising of the 20's and 30's, WPA and propaganda posters, giving contemporary concepts a timeless motif. Mark's meticulously crafted images have been incorporated into advertising, editorial and institutional clients including Simon & Shuster, Sony Music, NPR, UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, Heinz USA, Carnegie Mellon, PITT University, NFL, MLB, NHL, East End Brewing and Federated Investors. Recognized by Communication Arts Magazine, 3X3 Magazine, Archive 200 Best Illustrators, Graphis, Applied Arts Magazine, Creative Quarterly, the Los Angeles Society of Illustrators and the New York Society of Illustrators, Mark has been included in the Society's annual exhibitions and in Original Art, the best in children's book illustration. A member of the AIGA and a founding member of the Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators, he has also been awarded both gold and silver Addys, Golden Quill Awards, two PSI Best of Show awards, a gold medal from the Independent Publishers Book Awards, silver medals from both the New York Society of Illustrators and the Los Angeles Society of Illustrators. Three of Mark's works are in the permanent collection of the Society of Illustrators Museum in New York. Mark has been passing on his illustration knowledge as an educator in Pittsburgh for over 20 years and is an Associate Professor in Graphic Design at Chatham University.
