Former Steelers quarterback Ted Marchibroda passed away on Saturday at the age of 84. Marchibroda, who is from Franklin, Pa., was drafted by the Steelers in the first round in 1953, the fifth-pick overall.
Marchibroda played for the Steelers in 1953, left for a year to join the United States Army, and then came back for the 1955-56 seasons. Marchibroda was the first Steelers' quarterback to defeat the Cleveland Browns in Cleveland when he led them to a 24-16 victory in 1956, throwing two touchdown passes.
"It was a thrill because the Browns were so dominant in those years," Marchibroda was once quoted as saying.
Marchibroda is best known for his coaching career in various capacities, which included serving as the head coach of the Baltimore Colts (1975-79), Indianapolis Colts (1992-95) and Baltimore Ravens (1996-98).
