The Steelers will kick off their rookie minicamp on Friday with all of the team's draft picks, undrafted rookie free agents, and players the team has brought in for tryouts taking the field. First-year players on the Steelers' roster will also participate, which is permitted by the NFL's CBA.
The team will have five practices, two on Friday, two Saturday and one on Sunday, before the draft choices and undrafted rookie free agents continue to participate in the team's offseason program through veteran minicamp in June.
This will be the perfect opportunity for those who weren't drafted to catch the eye of Coach Mike Tomlin and his staff right off the bat, and could also open the door for one of the players in for a tryout. Linebacker Terence Garvin got invited to rookie minicamp in 2013 after not being drafted or signed, made a strong impression and was signed and has been on the roster the past two years.
It's also been a good opportunity for the rookie free agents to make a name for themselves, as the Steelers have a strong history of finding some great players that weren't drafted. Some of the best include Donnie Shell, Chris Hoke and Willie Parker, as well as James Harrison and Ramon Foster who are still on the roster.
