CHRIS RAINEY** Punt Returner
Maybe Coach Mike Tomlin's perspective really is the correct one, that since penalties were called on both returns what Chris Rainey did doesn't really count. But for those who were there to see it, that's a difficult case to make.
Within the span of about five minutes of playing time in the first quarter, Rainey returned a punt 78 yards for a touchdown and then 90 yards for a touchdown. Both were nullified by holding penalties, but the dynamic nature of the two returns deserve some recognition.
And so it is that Rainey's official statistics for the 17-16 win over the Carolina Panthers in the preseason finale show him gaining minus-1 yard on three rushes, minus-1-yard on two catches, 40 official yards on two punt returns, and 23 yards on his one kickoff return, Chris Rainey still is the Steelers Digest Player of the Week.
Also considered were Jonathan Dwyer, who led the team with 63 yards rushing; Weslye Saunders, who caught two passes for 35 yards, including the deciding 6-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter; and Sean Spence, who had five tackles, including one for loss, plus a special teams tackle before leaving the game with a significant knee injury.
