Practice Report: Sept. 3

Weather changed the location of practice again today, but not the defense's determination to practice as it intends to play.

The ball was hawked consistently at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex indoor facility, as it has been for the most part throughout training camp practices at Heinz Field.

Defensive plays on the ball made included:

-Cornerback Steven Nelson intercepting a pass thrown by quarterback Mason Rudolph intended for wide receiver Amara Darboh.

-Cornerback Joe Haden picking off Rudolph in the end zone on a 40-yard attempt at a touchdown.

-Safety Jordan Dangerfield coming up with a deflection of a Rudolph pass that glanced off wide receiver Saeed Blackwell's hands.

-Cornerback Justin Layne batting down a Rudolph pass intended for wide receiver James Washington.

-And safety Terrell Edmunds breaking up an attempted slip-screen from Rudolph to wide receiver Rey-Rey McCloud.

Take a look at the Steelers preparing for the 2020 regular season at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex

EBB AND FLOW: The offense, likewise, had its moments. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger produced touchdowns on all four of his red zone snaps via passes to wide receivers JuJu Smith-Schuster, Diontae Johnson and Washington, and tight end Eric Ebron.

Roethlisberger also completed deep balls to Johnson (twice) and Washington on the afternoon.

SPLIT THE DIFFERENCE: One-on-one drills between the offensive and defensive linemen included offensive tackle Zach Banner holding off rookie outside linebacker Alex Highsmith on an initial rep, and then Highsmith executing a spin move on Banner on the second.

Banner patted Highsmith on the helmet when the period ended.

GETTING NOTICED: Rookie cornerback James Pierre got head coach Mike Tomlin's attention for containing running back Kerrith Whyte on a punt return.

"That's right, two-six," Tomlin hollered.

THROUGH THE UPRIGHTS: Kicker Chris Boswell connected on field goals of 23, 25, 29, 30, 32, 39 and 40 yards during special teams work. The drill included special teams coordinator Danny Smith counting down from 10 pre-snap at one juncture to simulate a hurry-up situation. Punters Jordan Berry and Corliss Waitman shared the holding responsibilities.

INJURY UPDATE: Guard David DeCastro (lower-body injury) remained out, as he has been since exiting early last Friday night. Cornerback Cam Sutton (undisclosed) and wide receiver Chase Claypool (undisclosed) also did not practice.

Offensive lineman Stefen Wisniewski, who sat out Wednesday (undisclosed), returned on a limited basis. Long-snapper Kam Canaday (knee) was also a limited participant.

Center Maurkice Pouncey was given a veteran's day off.
