Tight end Ladarius Green, who was placed on the reserve/physically unable to perform (PUP) list on Aug. 30, is expected to return to practice on Tuesday when the team takes the field at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex.
Green, who signed with the team as an unrestricted free agent this offseason, has been hampered by an ankle injury that kept him off the field during offseason workouts and training camp. He was placed on the PUP list prior to the start of the season and wasn't eligible to be activated until after Week 6 of the season.
"Everything is getting better," said Green. "Everything is progressing."
While he was out he worked on the mental aspect of the game, but said putting that on the field is a completely different thing.
"It's a big difference," said Green. "You can learn as much as you want to but until you go on the field and actually go through it, it's a big difference.
"I had a good while to learn the playbook. I learned it pretty much and am pretty good at it. Until you go on the field and run it, it's a totally different animal."
The Steelers have 21 days from the time Green first practices to decide whether to activate him or he remains on the PUP list for the season.
