The 5K Race is a competitive event sanctioned by USA Track and Field with a 3.1-mile level course on the North Side highlighted by a spectacular finish along the warning track in Heinz Field. The fastest man and woman in open competition each win a trip for two to the Steelers-Browns game in Cleveland on September 14. In addition, prizes are awarded to the top five male and female finishers, the top three in each of 14 age groups, the nose tackle division for men 200 pounds and over, and the top two male and female finishers in the wheelchair division.
The starting gun sounds for the runners and walkers at 9 a.m. The Kids' Kickoff Run, a 40-yard dash along the south end zone of Heinz Field, will take place at 10 a.m.
Gatorade is the title sponsor of the race. Major sponsors include Giant Eagle, Dean's, Sony, UPMC St. Margaret, KDKA-TV 2, WDVE-FM, Fox Sports Radio 970, Dick's Sporting Goods and NetApp.
Proceeds from the race go to the Art Rooney Scholarship Fund, which was established in memory of the late founder of the Steelers who died in August of 1988 after living most of his life on the North Side. Each year a $10,000 scholarship in Art Rooney's name is presented to a graduating senior from each of the three high schools on the North Side – Oliver, Perry and North Catholic. Each school nominates three students who have been accepted to college and are in need of financial aid.
