Self-inflicted wounds: Following the Steelers 20-14 loss to the Houston Texans in the preseason opener, Coach Mike Tomlin was quick to address his disappointment in the outcome of the game.
"We work too hard to have the results we had tonight, so it's disappointing," said Tomlin.
But the key for the team, is how they respond next week when they take on the Buffalo Bills at Acrisure Stadium.
"How we work off of it obviously will define us, and we'll have a good rep at responding to negativity as we push into our next opportunity. We need to be significantly better.
"Taking nothing away from the Houston Texans. It's not about what they did. It was about the things that we didn't do or the wounds we inflicted to ourselves."
Those 'wounds' Tomlin referred to started with special teams, where there was a list of issues he addressed, starting first and foremost with field position and referring to is as junior varsity.
"Just looking at it from a special teams perspective, the field position and point standpoint was JV," said Tomlin "We had a block in the back on a kickoff return. From a field position perspective, we ran out of bounds without being forced on a punt that provided awesome field position for them. We had a bad snap on an extra point. We muffed a punt that produced seven points. You can't play football like that and think you're going to be in games. Really, it's amazing we had the ball in a one-score game at the end when you consider those things."
It wasn't just special teams Tomlin pointed to.
"On offense and defense, I thought we were JV on possession down football," said Tomlin. "Maybe one of seven at one point on offense. Not good enough. A couple of those were sacks.
"We had them in third and long several times on defense, and we lost those downs. We gave up a touchdown on a third and long in the safety rotation. There are some things we have to do better, some things we have to tighten up."
In the second quarter, the Steelers went for it on fourth-and-goal at the two-yard line, but quarterback Kyle Allen wasn't able to connect with receiver Calvin Austin III, turning the ball over on downs.
It was a play reminiscent of the seven shots drill the team does regularly during training camp, giving Tomlin confidence in it, but this time it didn't work.
"Some things that we've got to do better, some things that we've got to tighten up," said Tomlin. "We went for it fourth and two in the tight red. We spent a lot of time in that area of the field from a team development standpoint. We felt really comfortable being aggressive under those circumstances. We had a guy open. We didn't finish it.
"And so those are just some of the examples of the self-inflicted wounds that kind of characterized our night. We'll assess it, learn from it and roll up our sleeves up and get back to work next week."
Tomlin's injury report: "Bumps and bruises associated with play we're still assessing some of that. Keeanu Benton got poked in the eye and wasn't able to return. We'll have more information about him and maybe some of the others next time we come together."
Making routine plays routinely: With Russell Wilson not playing, the starting duties went to Justin Fields, who was acquired via a trade from the Chicago Bears this offseason.
Fields played only three series, completing five of six passes for 67 yards, while also helping to get the run game going.
"Overall, I think we ran the ball well, moved the ball well," said Fields. "I think, just a summary of the game, we were just shooting ourselves in the foot, fumbled snaps, I think all three phases. We could definitely be better on that part.
"The snapping part, we've just got to be on the same page. I will put that on me to just be on the same page and know who's in at center, know how to adjust and what I need to do next in the game.
"Just can't shoot ourselves in the foot. Have to do the routine things routinely. Q-C exchange. Like I said, I think that's the thing that stopped us when we weren't driving the ball well. It's not a good feeling when you're second and 13, second and 14. It's hard to score like that.
"I feel like I was in a good rhythm. Like I said, I think we were moving the ball well. Just the fumbled snaps, things like that, they can kill a whole drive. I think the overall rhythm of things, we were in and out of the huddle fast and felt good overall."
Coach Mike Tomlin liked some of what he saw from Fields, but he too pointed to the issues on the center-quarterback exchange in the game between Fields and center Nate Herbig.
"I thought he did some nice things, but obviously he was a component of the C-Q (center-quarterback) exchange," said Tomlin. "From my perspective, that's dual responsibility on the center and the quarterback. It negated a lot of good things going on in those first couple of drives. I think one definitively got stopped by it, went to second and 14.
"You get behind the chains, particularly at the early stages before you gain real cohesion and have enough of a menu to get you out of those circumstances, you're a dead group. So, the C-Q exchanges were an issue.
"I thought he and we did some good things, but it was just dulled by some of the negativity. From a rhythm passing standpoint, distributing the ball to people, I thought he and Kyle (Allen) did a nice job. I don't like the sacks and the one-dimensional possession down moments."
Fields said the key is to work on any issues they had in the game before they take on the Buffalo Bills on Saturday night at Acrisure Stadium.
"I think just tighten up the details," said Fields. "I think we're focusing on just controlling what we can control and not shooting ourselves in the foot. It's just a repetitive thing. As long as we do that, put ourselves in great field position and do the routine things routinely, I think we'll be great because other than that, like I said before, just move the ball well. I think we executed well, ran the ball well.
"When we were doing the routine things routinely, of course the ball was moving downfield. So just do that."
