This past weekend, the Steelers continued their commitment to growing the game of football and their presence in their global markets. The team hosted the 'Steelers Torneo de Tochito' event at Tec de Monterrey in Monterrey, Mexico on Saturday.
More than 500 boys and girls, from 10 states across Mexico, competed in the all-day flag football tournament that included three age groups, U-12, U-14 and U-16. With hundreds of family members on hand, supporting the 48 participating teams, excitement was high, and the energy was electric.
Current Steelers Beanie Bishop and Christian Kuntz, and alumni Max Starks and Vince Williams, were on hand to support the kids, sign autographs and cheer them on as medals were presented to the first, second and third place teams in each age group.
"The Steelers Torneo de Tochito event in Monterrey was an amazing experience for everyone in attendance - the participants, parents, as well as the Steelers players and alumni," said Starks. "Myself, Vince, Beanie and Christian not only got to see first-hand that Monterrey is Steelers Country, but also that Mexico has some incredibly talented young athletes. There were hundreds of boys and girls who put their flag football talents on full display, and we are so happy to have been there to be a part of it."
All of the participants received a Steelers t-shirt, and were able to take photos with and get autographs from the Steelers on-hand.
"I know flag football is a popular and fast-growing sport around the world, but I was blown away by the passion, excitement and skills we got to see in Monterrey," said Kuntz. "It was a real privilege to represent the Steelers at this event. I can't wait to get back to Mexico in the future."
The flag football tournament was the culmination of several days members of the Steelers organization spent in Monterrey, which also included a Business Summit with the local business community and attended a Sultanes baseball game. Starks and Williams threw out the first pitch and were part of a special in-game jersey swap on the field.
