Staff Sgt. Michelle Satterfield of the United States Army, a member of the 14th Quartermaster in Greensburg, thought she was coming to Heinz Field for the Steelers-Broncos game simply to be honored as the ATI Salute to Heroes recipient for the game, something she was thrilled with and grateful for the honor.
But there were plenty of surprises in store for her after she took the field, leaving her in stunned amazement.
Satterfield was welcomed to Heinz Field in the third quarter, with members of the 14th Quartermaster there to greet her. As she stood on the field, the PA announcer informed her that her brother Staff Sgt. Jeremy J. Boetjer was given leave from Ft. Benning in Georgia to be there with her for her special day and delivered home courtesy of FedEx. Satterfield sprinted to him, embracing him with tears in her eyes and a smile on her face.
But that was just the tip of the iceberg.
With her family by her side, Satterfield got the surprise of a lifetime when she was presented an oversized key to her new home, courtesy of the Steelers, Tunnel To Towers, FedEx and builders Blueroof Technologies from McKeesport in association with McKeesport High School.
Satterfield, a fourth-generation Army soldier who lives in West Virginia, has wanted to relocate to be closer to the 14th Quartermaster and this will allow her to live her dream and she was overcome with emotion.
"I was extremely surprised to see my brother," said Satterfield. "But I never expected the house thing. It was very overwhelming.
"It means the world to me. This is going to open up so many opportunities for my son and I. It's pretty overwhelming. This is the best Christmas ever."
The Steelers-Broncos game was the team's "Thank You Fans" game and it was highlighted by multiple activities, including a pregame concert by rap superstar and Pittsburgh native Wiz Khalifa, who sang his Pittsburgh inspired song, "Black and Yellow."
"It's always good to be home, see the Steelers logo on the ground, performing in front of the people," said Khalifa. "I am just happy to be here. The energy is amazing."
Actor Billy Gardell, the star of Mike and Molly, and also a Pittsburgh native, joined Khalifa for the Terrible Towel Twirl and also presented Steelers Nation Unite member Jeff Moll with a Steelers Fan Cave, courtesy of Pepsi and Steelers Nation Unite.
And last, but not least, there was another major giveaway as Tom Kase went home with a Ford F-150 XLT SuperCrew Truck.
