The Steelers paid tribute to former radio play-by-play broadcaster Bill Hillgrove during the first quarter of today's game.
Hillgrove, who retired this offseason after serving as the 'Voice of the Steelers' for 30 years, was recognized for his illustrious career with the Steelers Radio Network.
"My role has changed. I have become a fan," said Hillgrove. "I have been watching the games on TV, hollering at the TV, which is what fans do.
"I am comfortable with that. I did it for 30 years. I don't know how I did it. But I made it work.
"I am very comfortable with my decision to retire."
Hillgrove was presented a jersey by color analyst Craig Wolfley and received a huge ovation from the home crowd as he waved from one of the stadium suites.
"It's really special the team did this today," said Hillgrove. "I am glad they decided to do it because it gave me the chance to wave to the fans and say thanks to them. Without the fans, we don't have much of a game."
Hillgrove said having the role he did with the team was a dream come true, and something that will always be a part of him.
"For a kid who grew up in Pittsburgh, rooting for the Steelers since the early 1950s, having the role I did for 30 years meant everything," said Hillgrove. "I never expected it would happen, but I'm glad that it did because it put me on a big stage and I am forever grateful."
