Christmas is about making dreams come true, and the Steelers did that for a special young man. Jay Darryl McCallum, a 19-year old who lives in Austin, Texas, suffers from klippel-trenaunay-weber syndrome, as well as duchenne muscular dystrophy, an extremely rare combination.
McCallum and his family, who are all Steelers fans thanks to their father raising them that way, were guests of the team for Monday's game against the Texans, which included pregame field passes and the opportunity to meet several Steelers players.
The team worked in conjunction with the Quinton Aaron Foundation to make the magic happen, and it was McCallum's sister, Dannie, who first reached out to help the dream come true.
"This is extremely exciting, being together with all of my family, getting to bring my dad to his first NFL game for his favorite team and to do this for my brother," said Dannie. "It's just a really good moment to share with my family.
"We have always wanted to do this. We grew up watching the Steelers. In our cribs when we were little my dad would hang a Steelers hat just so we knew that's what we were going to be when we grew up. Getting to do this with my entire family really brings us together when we are all so far apart in college, living on our own."
Among those McCallum met were T.J. Watt and JuJu Smith-Schuster, and that combined with the Steelers win made for a perfect Christmas.
