Who is the only person who played for both the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Pittsburgh Pirates?
With the Pirates season starting today, what better time than to share a little bit of Steelers history about Rex Johnston, the answer to the question and yes, the only person who played for both teams.
Johnston played for the Steelers in 1960, a seldom used running back who was in the same backfield as Hall of Famer John Henry Johnson and Pro Bowler Tom Tracy. Johnston had four carries for 12 yards during his short Steelers career.
His time with the Pirates wasn't much longer, as the outfielder played only the 1964 season at a time when Willie Stargell, Roberto Clemente and Bill Virdon roamed the outfield. He had 10 at bats, with no hits and three walks, and was only in the big leagues for 26 days.
While Ben Roethlisberger has taken batting practice with the Pirates, and Andrew McCutchen is a regular at Heinz Field for Steelers games, it's not likely you will ever see a player actually be on the roster for both teams ever again.
